Mandera Municipality has achieved global recognition after being honored with the prestigious Green City Award by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) in the Netherlands. This highly coveted award celebrates cities that demonstrate exceptional commitment to sustainable horticulture, urban greening, and environmental conservation
The Mandera greening initiative, which began in 2015 under the leadership of then-County Governor Ali Ibrahim Roba, was initially met with skepticism. However, the program has grown into a remarkable success, transforming the landscape of Mandera Town and setting an example for sustainable urban development in arid regions.

“At the time, many doubted the potential for success, but Alhamdulillah, our efforts have been recognized on a global scale. I am proud to dedicate this award to the 1,300 vulnerable mothers in Mandera Town who have journeyed with us, demonstrating unparalleled commitment to the greening of our town,” said former Governor Ali Roba.
These women have played a crucial role in the program, not only helping mitigate climate change through tree planting but also securing a sustainable livelihood from their efforts. Their dedication and hard work have turned Mandera into a greener, more livable town, inspiring similar initiatives across the country.
The success of the program was further amplified by the enthusiastic participation of Mandera Town residents, who embraced the initiative and planted trees in every homestead. Their collective commitment has driven a community-wide transformation, making Mandera an unexpected but well-deserving recipient of the global Green City Award.
Former Governor Roba also extended his gratitude to his successor, Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, for ensuring the continuity of the Greening Mandera program since 2022. Despite operating without external funding, the program has continued to thrive, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Mandera community.
“The progress we have achieved without external support is a testament to our community’s resilience and dedication. Imagine how much more we could accomplish with a little external support,” he remarked.
This award is not just a recognition of past efforts but a call to action for greater investment in urban greening and sustainable development. It highlights the incredible impact of grassroots environmental initiatives and the potential for more cities to follow in Mandera’s footsteps.
